ELUSIVE ECHOES

OVERVIEW

For this project, I was assigned three poets. I was tasked with creating a poster series for an event where these three would be perfomring: “Elusive Echoes”. Each poster should be unique to the indiviudal poet whilst still clearly being apart of a series.

One of the requirements from this project
was that the basis of our composition needed to be created from the physical manipulation of type, especially in a way
that could be seen as experimental

MY POETS

I was assigned Charmaine Lee,
JJJJJerome Ellis, and Patti Smith.
All three of them were civil, gender, and arts activists, using their poetry to spark change.
Charmaine Lee is an Australian vocalist known for her experimental approach to music, often pushing its limits through new, improvised, and risk-driven performances. She frequently incorporates electronic elements to further expand the boundaries of music. Lee advocates for artistic expression and champions the acceptance and representation of marginalized communities, serving as a voice for them. She enjoys performing in diverse settings, using these opportunities to raise awareness and promote accessibility in the arts.JJJJJerome Ellis is a disabled Grenadian-Jamaican-American artist, and surfer who stutters. The extra Js at the beginning of their name reflect the word they say they stutter on most. Ellis creates evocative soundscapes through saxophone, electronics, and vocals. Their work centers on inclusion, with a focus on creating representation in the arts for dis-abled individuals, members of the LGBTQ+ com-munity, and people of all ethnic backgrounds. Ellis’ art advocates for justice for those who stutter, equal representation in the arts, cultural justice, and racial equity.Patti Smith is an American punk rocker, poet, and singer. Beginning as a poet in the Manhattan art scene, she later incorporated musical elements into her work, helping shape the punk rock movement as it is known today. Her music blends raw poetic lyrics with intense energy, while her distinctive voice and commanding stage presence propelled her to widespread acclaim. Through her art, Smith has championed social justice, gender equality, women's rights, and LGBTQ+ support. In the 1970s, she stood out in the music scene for her outspoken resistance to the Vietnam War.

EXPERIMENTAL FREEPLAY

Using printed out letters and phrases I
experimented during rule based workshops
altering the form and integrating words and
letters into one another. Through this I was
expressing the collaboration this is required to
achieve the rights and possibilities that these
poets have been fighting for.

DIGITAL IDEATIONS

DIGITAL ITERATIONS

I took lines of each poets work, and I manipulated
these lines of type through slits I cut in their names.
This idea was carried out to communicate the
sense of community, collaboration, and teamwork
that each of them preach. They all believe that
more progress and change can be achieved through
working together as a community than alone. Their
work is here to unite these people together to
create real change.
